One part really gets me: "The state's three abortion clinics already perform ultrasounds, paid for by the woman seeking the procedure, to determine the fetus' age."

So they're going to require the patient to pay for the ultrasound, but they're not going to let her choose what to do with it, whether to look or not.

I find the whole thing pretty paternalistic, like the government doesn't trust women to make good decisions on their own without its "help".

that's really fucked! I can't believe other states are also looking into this (with variations)! How exactly can they force you too look at an ultrasound? Would they really withhold you getting an abortion if you flat out refused to look/listen? I don't really understand the reasoning behind this either except to make the women who are getting an abortion feel worse about the whole situation, how dis-empowering and almost a little bit cruel. What happend to the freedom of choice sans guilt? or did we never really have that?

I don't see an issue with requiring the *option* of viewing the ultrasounds, which seems to be what is going on in my state, but this seems ridiculous. Especially if the woman is expected to foot the bill.
